Hybrid Tree Walk
A ‘hybrid’ walk through nature where people could join both in-person and virtually.
How could people without physical access to green spaces connect with them online?
About:
The Come Together artist cohort experimented with live streaming a local Tree Walk using a DIY harness from the ‘Proxy Protest’ workshop.
Filwood Tree Champion’ Jim Smith guided us through the Northern Slopes in Knowle West. Jim spoke about the trees, local life and history of Knowle. Virtual attendees could chat and wave to the artists and local walkers who came came in-person.

Our physical walk has been translated into this virtual Miro board.
The Miro board includes recordings of Jim Smith describing various trees’ origins, folklore, and medicinal properties; as well as recordings of conversations with local residents ranging from how they stayed connected during the pandemic to how they accessed these walks.
Miro is a free online whiteboarding platform where a group can add drawings and digital sticky notes. We found it to be an excellent tool for hybrid workshops and experiences. Watch Fiona’s 32 minute Miro tutorial here to try it yourself.
